Environment and Sustainability

Vision for a Sustainable and Thriving Community

I am committed to fostering a vibrant, resilient, and sustainable community that cherishes its natural surroundings and safeguards them for present and future generations.  My vision is to create an environment where people, nature, and progress coexist harmoniously, ensuring a high quality of life, economic prosperity, and the preservation of our unique ecological heritage.

Core Principles:

    1. Preservation of Natural Resources: I pledge that my decisions and actions protect and manage our air, water, soil, flora, and fauna, valuing them as essential components of our local ecosystem. I will employ science-based approaches to sustainably manage these resources, preventing degradation and loss.

    1. Climate Action and Resilience: I recognise the urgent need to address climate change. Through reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, adaptation measures, and community engagement, I will work with the community towards creating a climate-resilient community that is prepared to face the challenges of a changing environment.

    1. Biodiversity Conservation: I acknowledge the importance of biodiversity in maintaining ecological balance and supporting human well-being. I will prioritise the conservation and restoration of local ecosystems, ensuring the survival of native species and the protection of critical habitats.

    1. Sustainable Land Use and Development: I am committed to responsible urban planning that balances growth and conservation. I will encourage compact and mixed-use development, protect green spaces, and promote sustainable transportation options to minimize the environmental footprint of urbanisation.

    1. Waste Management and Circular Economy: I aspire to minimise waste generation, promote recycling and reuse, and encourage a shift towards a circular economy. My goal is to work with the community to reduce landfill waste and promote resource efficiency throughout the community.

    1. Community Engagement and Education: I believe that an informed and engaged community is vital to the success of our environmental efforts. I will provide opportunities for education, outreach, and involvement, empowering residents, businesses, and institutions to take an active role in environmental stewardship.

    1. Partnerships and Collaboration: Recognising that environmental challenges transcend administrative boundaries, I will seek partnerships with neighbouring Council Divisions, all levels of government, regional organisations, non-government community associations, and businesses to jointly address shared concerns.

    Action Plan

    1. Promotion of Renewable Energy: I will promote and facilitate the adoption of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power in public infrastructure to reduce our carbon footprint.

    1. Green Building Standards: I will facilitate and promote green building codes that encourage energy-efficient construction and promote sustainable building practices.

    1. Natural Area Restoration: I will facilitate and promote restoring and preserving local natural areas, re-establishing native vegetation, and enhancing biodiversity to create healthier ecosystems.

    1. Water Conservation: I will facilitate and promote water-saving initiatives, promote water-efficient landscaping, and support projects that enhance water quality and preserve aquatic habitats.

    1. Zero Waste Initiatives: I will work towards achieving zero waste by promoting recycling, composting, and reducing single-use plastics.

    1. Climate Resilience Planning: I will facilitate and promote comprehensive climate action and resilience plans, integrating strategies for flood management, extreme weather preparedness, and community education.

    1. Education and Awareness Campaigns: I will facilitate and promote workshops, seminars, and outreach programs to raise awareness about environmental issues and foster a culture of sustainability within our community.

    1. Stakeholder Engagement: I will engage with residents, businesses, schools, and community organisations to gather input, identify concerns, and collaborate on solutions to address local environmental challenges.

By working with the community and adhering to this policy, I will strive to lead by example and create a legacy of environmental stewardship for generations to come. Together, we can build a vibrant and sustainable community that thrives in harmony with nature while embracing innovation and progress.
